I wouldn't bother with the other side sequels though, they kind of went off in a weird half action shooter based direction for some ungodly reason.. :S
So glad this upcoming continuation will bring a return to the proper gameplay :D
If you liked Commandos series, then, try Desperados Dead or Alive( ignore Cooper's Revenge & Helldorado), Shadow Tactics Blades of the Shogun(same devs who's making Desperados 3), Crookz The Big Heist(a tad bit different but almost identical & fun) & Robinhood The Legend of Sherwood(needs some tweak to make it compatible with modern system).
To answer your 2nd question, It wasnt profitable anymore to make games like this. Niche market really but Mimimi made Shadow Tactics back in 2016 which channelled a bit of life~force back into this genre. The end fruit is Desperados 3. Hopefully it won't stop here. :)
Was because some hippies got upset about cowboys and indian theme. Took tell rockstar games opened it up and saw the billion dollar demand for it, with red redemtion, now it is all over the place because it is "new"
i know it is hard to sell a game like first commandos nowdays (talking about the dificulty), ST has alot of quality of life improvements, how hard would be to create a game like first commandos with QoL from ST? would love to see those devs try some crazy stuff like that
