That's a good question. In general none of the ways to spend them is really good. But obviously some are better than others.
For example excavation resets and gem conversions are pretty useless.
Ruby Power bonuses are probably nice at the beginning, but sadly useless later. I mean why should you care about 2 or 3 more assistants when you have 1 Million of them? Luckily you can get all spent rubies back from there with just spending 1 ruby, so it maybe isn't the worst ting how to temporary spend them.
And about timewarps: When you are patient they are useless. When you hate waiting they can be useful to shortened one of these long runs wich needs over a week with a 5d time warp (don't use something else than 5d) But using time warps only mean that you finish the game a little bit faster by sacraficing gems. In the end you will reach the same end game as everyone else while waiting for new content, just maybe 10 days faster and with 24 less rubies. So instead of waiting 10 days for unlocking stuff you skip it with rubies and spend 10 days longer with waiting for new content.

Let's say: I still have 43 unspent rubies because I really don't know any good way how to spend them. So do with them whatever you want. The most important thing about getting rubies is to reach the total tresholds to improve the ruby power production bonus. For example at 50 rubies it gets from 100% to 200%, wich is nice. But spending them is just...meh.

TL;DR everything sucks, timewarps are the only decent use and only for timegates you're gonna have too much time for anyway.

Alright thanks for the explanation. I also wondered about the things to spend them on.. they did not seem that great. And was also thinking to save up to 50 for the boost to have a tleast that.. It seems the most impactful of all the things I could first "spend" on.

The upgades are not that great howver OF the upgrade you get an option for my suggestion is as follows

Max mana... Avoid this total waise and VERY small boost, their are herritates and upgrades that do MUCH MUCH more for far less
Assistnce. Useful early game. I think the math said that 1 extra assistant really helps get the fairy chanting achiment early. Avoid but 1-2 might be ok
Mana regen, no such thing as too much mana regen. LIkely one of the more soild choices
Exchange rate% Oddly useful, Very few upgrades give exchange rate % so this is likely your best long term bang for your buck.
Gem bonus, Value is too small, but much like exchange rate % a good choice if you have to pick one go with either the exhcnage rate, this or the mana regen.

Mana regen? A solid choice? Are you high mate? You do realize you get 0.5 mana regen per upgrade right? Which is basically nothing past R0. Hell, same can be said of ALL the ruby upgrades. Once you get past R0, they all suck, with only Exchange bonus being any decent past the start of the game.

What does exchange bonus do exactly?
VampireKitten Jul 13, 2017 @ 3:49pm
It's extra bonus for each individual Royal Exchange. Nothing great, but due to interactions with some dragon upgrades it's the best ruby bonus, which is not saying much, honestly.

But you know that you don't have to save up the rubies for that, don't you? It just counts your total amount wich means you can freely spend them for anything you like, in the moment in wich you get it it will get counted for it, everything you do after it is not important for this bonus.

I have never once said "you know what I don't need any more of? Mana regen. Yes its only 0.5 but every little bit helps. its not a bad choice. Perticuarly for the first few reincarnations when you are doing challanges. Some of hte vanilla factiosn mana regen is horrable before you are doing merc merc merc thing.
Tbh I just go for Gem Power bonuses.
It'll never NOT be useful to buff THAT to be honest, unless you're just at the literal end of the game's content.

And since you just need 1 ruby to get the rubies back it isn't that bad either. Unless you bought a lot rubies because somewhen the price increases.

Sorry for the necro, but this is the first post that comes up on a google search, so the info should probably be here. "Mana regen" is really useful if you do a lot of offline "undead" play. they have a bonus (125 X mana regen) while offline. Each mana regen bought will respectively add 62.5% to the offline total production of coins. And mana regen is always nice while actively playing as well. Win/win

Thats actually a very bad bonus and undead would benefit more overall out of ruby assistants than ruby mana regen, not that undead are any useful in R0 without drow..

I'm pretty sure he's referring to "starting out". For the core beginning gameplay, it's actually pretty decent when you only have to spend a few rubies to get it. Then it stacks on top of the assistant bonus. :)
