Not entirely. If you're just starting out, then elves will have the best production, but if not then you're going to have to give some indication of your progress.

Especially what you need the coins for. Coins for royal exchange isn't always the best idea. For upgrades it's a different story.

If you can still afford to make excavations early in the game, then druids. If not, which seems fairly likely, try titans instead.

Here's a thread from yesterday - read my comment on it. If you're using the Steam app and don't want to go into browser to open that, just go to the thread from yesterday about getting to 500 Qid Coins - they're asking for help at the same stage as you.

I can attest that spell combos are the way to go. Didn't even occur to me to try that until I was around the same spot as OP, trying to unlock the Dwarves. Takes a little more patience and effort than just leaving one spell on auto-cast, but the results are worth it.
