Research and mercenaries (R18)
Something i still don't understand,

I see that research stays between abdications, you don't lose the accumulated points. But is there any benefit to reserching if i am still using mercenaries for now? In other words, at this level (R18) should i just ignore research if i am mostly using mercenaries? (using the diamond forge fairy build seems stronger than any one race with research so far)

The benifet to unlocking them, not having to spend time doing it later when mercs fall off, and research gets you further faster. I would say, get all the ones that you can, before you get to R40

Ok,

But at R30-40, wouldn't I have much more money and coins than I have now? It seems to me I'd have so much more that whatever i can spend now will hardly make a difference, unless i am missing something?
DrakenKin Aug 30, 2018 @ 8:11am
What i mean by that is at R0 I was hardly making a few coins per click. Now I am making millions and billions of coins with the press of a button. I am guessing at R40 production will grow to ridiculous levels compared to now, so those few billions coins i would put in research pale in comparison to my income at R40, so wouldn't it be useless to do it now?

Why I am considering this is because i am spending zero time on regular races (save for the few runs after i reincarnate to get to "No" or so, then i switch to mercenaries), but if i have to research, i'd have to play them more now, which will slow down my progress.

There are three factors to unlocking research -- research points (has to be done once), unlocking individual researches (has to be done once as well), and activating researches (has to be done each abdication, there's a limit to the number you can activate from each category (5 initially)).

Research points are generally kind of easy to max regardless, but they will get easier as you progress.

Unlocking individual researches is what you can do now -- and it depends on the research if it will be easier later, or about the same. (A few researches might be harder if you wait until R40+ due to how ascension works).

For unlocking a research, you generally have to perform a challenge, maybe as a particular faction, maybe as any faction. For example, S105 (Increases mana regen based on your RP totals) requires that you have a total of 600 RP among all 6 research trees. This one would technically be easier in later Rs, but isn't that difficult in general. W50 (Increases faction coin find chance based on # of undercities you own (Undead only)) however is one of the more annoying ones, which requires 2 days Evil playtime this R. (If it weren't for the fact that W50 was used for later researches such as the more useful W180, I might put this one off).

In general, research is near required to progress past about R19-R20. While you can still use mercs up to the gem totals you're getting to now, past that it gets increasingly hard to advance because mercs don't scale that well.

I see, thanks for the explanation!

I don't see where to check the condition to unlock the research ingame (hovering them). Is this another thing we have to rely on the Wiki for?

If you've already got it, it should show a red X on it, or a green checkmark on it. If you haven't unlocked it, when you hover over it, it should show the Reqs

Actually, it won't show the reqs, only the percent you have completed it, and either a ? or a !. A ? means you can't unlock it with your current faction, and a ! means you can. The theory is that you try things to see what makes the percent go up, but it's a whole lot easier just to look at a guide.

Ah great, ty!

I don't want to spam new topics so ill ask here. Can you explain this? I am pretty sure i had more than 1 day of playtime then switched to undead, but i haven't gotten this one :

"A135: 1 Day Play Time in current Reincarnation (Across all Factions, but must be Undead to unlock)"

Does the research tell you this, or does it just say X% when you hover over it?

No that's a copy paste from the wiki

Hmm. Have you played for the one day in the R?
DrakenKin Aug 30, 2018 @ 3:11pm
If it means playing 24 hours without going offline, on the same reincarnation, yes i did.

Do i have to be undead at the exact moment i reach 24 hours or can i switch to undead anytime after that to unlock it?
RogueFireWolf Aug 30, 2018 @ 3:13pm
It means you need to have played for at least 24 hours, 0 minutes, 0 seconds in that Reincnarnation, and after you've played at least that long (or on the run where you hit it), do Undead Research, and it will unlock.

It doesn't matter if it's online or offline - if it did, it'll specify.
