If you struggle to make a good build you can just look in Goof's Not a Wiki for a good one.
I actually needed 3 tries until I finally had a build wich got me both the coin and the assistant requirement within 5 minutes, whereas for all other stages I always did it with the first try, so this is really the most difficult part. (But sadly I still always had to ait 12 hours for every step)
But when you do an U Dwairy build and see that the HoL's still have over 90% you just know that it can't work.
And yes, after getting dragons ou progress a lot faster. But you probably need T3 spell tiers for Titans to be able to reach Dragons
The only spell that will be useful to have at tier three for the last stage of unlocking dragons is call to arms. All the other spells available to titans cost more to upgrade to tier three than elder dragon does to buy.
I certainly agree that having gem grinder and lightning strike at tier three becomes very useful once dragon is unlocked. That said, at R46 call to arms will probably be significantly ahead of the other spells because of the time that gets spent in demons, goblins, and fairies. In some cases it may be desirable to delay the move to R47, if the other spells haven't yet reached tier three. Equally, they may have reached that point during R45, where a difference in cast times between call to arms and other spells is less likely to develop.
