Interestingly though if I force disable PS4 controller support the buttons are incorrect. PS4 X is treated as Xbox B, and PS4 Square is treated as Xbox A.
What about wheel support? Surely your team can develop a solution to overcome multiple controllers connected and prioritize one. Maybe a Controller select in setting might help?
I realize at this point I think I've figured out why I have no trouble with PS4 controllers while everyone else does. Once on the controller screen, check to see if Playstation is enabled. If it isn't, click on the "Controller General Settings" and turn it on there. Then it should work fine without DS4Windows.
But really that's it. I enabled PS4 controller support in Steam, and then things just work most of the time. Once in a while I have a minor issue, but in those cases going into the properties for the game and overriding the support to disable Steam input, and it clears right up. This is rare though, but sometimes can be helpful if the game itself has native support for the PS4 controller, and will show PS button prompts like Distance.
edit: on my arcade cabinet, i kept using gamepad controls (i use directinput controllers there) but i first setup steam xbox 360 controller configuration so it emulates xinput based on my direct input controllers and then i remapped the controls around basically when i press A Button the game will think i press RT and when i press B button the game will think i send LT button etc just make sure to set em up correctly and keep your head around it when changing controls (have to think about what game does with certain controller & how to remap to different buttons). I also had problems with 2 players setup but i fixed that by making sure the controllers did not share a config but used a unique config per joypad even though i have set them up the same
