Should I play this first if. . .

This is my first Star Ocean game. . . well I played one on the PS2 (or PSP can't remember which) and I only played a bit, but I liked it a lot. I hear a lot of people ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on this one, but I want to know will I lose anything out lore or story wise by playing this one?

Honestly, this would be the best one to play first. Given that it's a prequel to the entire series.

Just ignore what people says about this game, and play it without problem.
You don't lose anything if you play SO4 for first. There is no specific order, but this game is chronologically the first.

This was my first Star Ocean game, and despite it's flaws, it's my favorite game of all time. Like chrnodroid said, it's the first in the timeline, and if you go play SO1 afterwards, you'll see a lot of familiar things. Personally I don't mind the English voices , but I can see why others hate it. This'll have Japanese voices, so it's up to you. After having played all SO except 5, I can safely say this one has the best gameplay by a longshot.

I played this game on ps3, the story honestly is incredibly cheesy at times but overall it is pretty good.

It does not have spoilers or anything for other titles, and while it is technically a prequel it is so far in the past that nothing that happens in it is particularly relevant for other titles.

Personally I would say star ocean 3 is better, lets hope it gets a pc remaster too

Yeah I can confirm it, lore-wise, this is actually the best Star Ocean game to start with, every other game comes after this one in the timeline. Also it's an awesome game.

Star Ocean games are tailor made to be played in any order. Starting here is fine. Going in release order is also fine. I started with 3 which is probably the worst one to start with but its still fine. Release order is probably "best" because of easter eggs and allusions to previous games.
