Is Star Ocean: The Last Hope worth playing on Steam?
So, I want to start playing the Star Ocean series, and I'm really thinking that I might wanna play The Last Hope first. It seems a little interesting, and both of the VAs of Reimi in this game voice my favorite character of a series that I really love. I like the character designs and the VAs a lot (both in English and Japanese), so I might love this game. Is it any good for a first Star Ocean game, and is the Steam port good too? Because I really haven't played my Xbox 360 in a very long time and I don't feel like doing so because I have to catch up on Dragon Quest XI and Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory.

Steam port is solid. Runs great and the game overall is really good.
I'd say SO3 is probably more interesting but seeing as this one is the only one on Steam there's not exactly options. This one is also the prequel to the rest of the series so a great place to start.

As for worth, that's subjective. I could tell you it's the best game I ever played and the statement would mean nothing. I'd say just try it out if you're interested. Read reviews for more detail.
The Japanese dub is naturally better. The English one is okay as the actors aren't bad but it really gets cheesy at points.

Given the story, you are probably better off with bad voice acting. It fits the game more. This game is a huge mess in so many ways.

I've enjoyed it with no issues on PC, port was pretty solid from beginning to end when I've beaten it.

I played this on 360 a long time ago. I was not a fan of this game, so I can't recommend it. As far as I can remember, the gameplay is ok. The story and characters are not good. It is a cast of generic and annoying anime characters who have no substance on their own, but only serve to act as cheerleaders for the main character, and react to his decisions. This is especially evident to me when the hero reaches his "lowest point" and he just cries, and all anyone can do is just talk about how bad he feels. Crap game.

As far as whether or not I could recommend the steam version? I don't know. The story is the same, so based on that, no. If they fixed the crashing issue I had to deal with on 360, then it's still no.

Seeing that a few of these replies are telling me that the story and characters are pretty awful, I think I might want to skip the cutscenes, if they are skippable. Or, is the story bad to the point where it is laughable? Because I love to laugh at terrible things.
And I've also heard the gameplay was pretty good, so maybe I'll focus more on that. And I'm also considering using a VPN to play Star Ocean's mobile game Anamensis as well, if that turns out to be fine, because the only complaints I've heard of it so far was only because it was a mobile game and nothing more.

I also might want to try out SO5 on my PS4 as well, since that's the one console I really want to keep in my TV for a while. I'll probably play that one after I play SO4 and maybe Anamensis.
