They appear to work with earthling rules. Just look at the shop owner in Triom (just a town over) who was worried about her missing daughter. There was a quest for you to go find her. And after you found her the daughter was worried about her missing cat. Then you had a quest to go find the cat. How many people would really just let their child (or grandchild in this case) run off with complete strangers, especially to fight who-knows-how-many monsters? Even if we throw out earthling logic, the logic of others on the same planet shows that this guy is a crappy grandpa. The guy didn't even know how strong the group of strangers was that took off with his granddaughter in tow.
Lymle herself doesn't really open to anyone else but them. it's a sign that he can trust them. Of course there is always the possibility that they are evil but it's not like they look evil anyway.
In short, Lymle isn't just your average casual weak child. Sure, she can't totally defend herself but her potential is still recognized. Apparently Lymle decide to go with them and HE can't do anything about it since anyway, he's cursed by stone. What could he even do, anyway? :P
Oh, I certainly don't think they're evil. I just think that everyone else acts normal with their kids, but this guy doesn't treat her like a normal person (and I'm using normal relative to other people from their world, not from my own perspective) would treat their child/grandchild.
I still say that a recognized potential is no reason to let your granddaughter run off and fight monsters with a bunch of strangers.
Even if he couldn't physically stop her one could expect an argument like, "If you live under my house you'll obey my rules! If you leave you're grounded!" Something like that. But he's just going, "Oh... you're going to go do a bunch of [obviously] dangerous stuff? Well.. alright then... Hurry back."
We can agree to disagree. I'm not saying you're wrong by saying he's not a crappy grandpa. But I feel like the dude needs to learn how to parent. Or grandparent.
It's classic in JRPGs. I also suspect not all children know symbology but Lymle is already a mid level at it. Include the summoner power. She is more than capable of fighting monsters. :D
You've been shown all sort of unplausable stuff up untill that point and you draw the line at a old man letting his young-adult grand daughter go to space?
She can summon fire and wipe out villages, I'm pretty sure she can do whatever the ♥♥♥♥ she wants with little opposition.
Yeah, physically looking no older than 6 is strange. Maybe it's a weird, alien, genetic defect or something.
Also, his feet are rocks, Lym is effectively a teenager, and last I checked, plenty of parents in good health can't do squat to stop a teenager from doing whatever the heck they want. He's at least trying to find a way for her to do it safely.
She's like one of those creepy dolls my sister in law collects. I'd push it out the door too if I were him.
