Even Reimi says "Edge its not your fault, they would have caused it regardless, we just sped it up a bit." Or something simmlar to it after the place you get the catloli.
Shion in Xenosaga was one of the better main chars of any Jrpg period, Defently better than any main char a final fantasy has ever had, Better than most jrpgs period actually.
Not all are bad, I look more along the lines of "does this voice fit the character well?" and "DO they actually try to act or just sound bored reading lines off a script?" Or "Can they actually pronounce the names properly?" For example Lymle's voice in So4 really irked the hell out of me that 'kay" on the end of everything got on my nerves pretty fast, Meracle too kinda got on my bad side. Most screw ups in dubs are those or even both of them.
Shion is strong and smart, aside from her internal depression regarding Kevin, there aren't many female characters like her, if not, the only one.
Also secondly the characters and dialogue is awful, the writing is really bad even for a JRPG and the characters can be so damn annoying it will drive you crazy.
The visual were also a huge issue but I would imagien it's not a problem in this remaster. The original literally had chests for example pop into your view not until you are almost at arms length.
Overall it's a weak weak JRPG and can't hold a candle to the greatness of SO:2 or even the very good game SO:3
OOOOhboi, was that game boring.
To be honest apparently 90% of JRPG's have bad english voice acting, but supposedly good japanese voice acting, I dont know the basis of these comments other than possible racism from japanese speaking players. It goes without saying I would rather have even bad english voice acting that I can at least understand over a language I cannot understand.
Dont get me wrong the acting is not on the level of a top end well acted movie, but its not terrible either. I think most of the actors are fine, especially lymle. I also love lymle as a character, faize is also strong.
I havent played any other SO1, 2 or 3. I have played the newest game S05, S05 is terrible compared to this game. S04 was good enough to lure me into action RPG genre.
I dont think the game is perfect, here is what I consider as flaws.
1 - Rush gauge system, rush mode can be activated too frequently, especially on higher difficulty levels. So too many periods in fights where enemies cannot be interrupted.
2 - Critical hits breaking bonus board, shouldnt be a thing, since bosses tend to not able to be stagger locked, it leads to me kiting them instead of fighting them so I keep my bonus board. Same with certian enemies that have critical hit chance and on higher diffilculty levels when enemies are constantly in rush mode.
3 - Disc swapping on the 360 version post/end game is stupid.
4 - Synthesis system forcing you to accept junk passives, made even worse on the international version where foi and exp buffs force you to have junk passives as well.
5 - Balancing end game for spellcasters is poor, in the beta all spells could be added to chain combos, but in final release it was nerfed so late game spells couldnt be added, this leads to DPS been outclassed by physical fighters to an extreme level end/post game.
6 - Targeting on the 360 was painfully bad, there was no manual targeting button, on the international version this is partially rectified.
7 - On the international version enemies target sarah heavily due to defensive magic causing aggro, was a regressive change, in addition her buff durations got nerfed.
8 - No save system in WD, it was an interesting idea, but impractical, its hard to dedicate a 10 hour gaming session so essentially it means people just left their consoles on with the game paused whilst in WD so they could sleep/work.
None of these issues are major game breakers, they just a combination of annoyances. The battle system is very fluid. Story is reasonable, music is good. The graphics I would also say were decent for the time, this was released when the 360 was a brand new console.
I noticed jrpg players tend to be unable to get over imperfect characters, throwing toys out of the pram.
What happens with edge is interesting and I have no issue with it.
Making crow the main character would probably have been way more popular but also more boring.
Part of what makes the Star Ocean franchise so loved was the introduction of the main characters to the wider political and existential threats.
Roddick was a simple country boy from a literal backwater barely medieval planet and he was introduced to the wider galactic community via Ronyx but just a little. Turns out Roak has a lot of lost civ stuff that is of interest to the wider community namely Fargett, Lezonia and Earth.
SO2 is about Ronyx's son and they go a level higher with Energy Nede and the Ten Wise Men. We only get hints of their significance in that game and learn they seeded a lot the planets we know of. And later in SO3 learn they are basically disgruntled anklebiter hacker teenagers from 4D space.
SO3 is about Fayt going EVEN higher and rebelling against the 4D people who are basically gods.
SO4 is naturally gonna sound lame in comparison to rebelling and winning and separating your UNIVERSE from the people that created it so you can live independently. Fighting some Grigori is cool but we have meta knowledge of the universe and know what they really are which ruins the suspension of disbelief.
You can't kill "God" (Luther) and then go back to acting like "Angels" (some mid level tech guy) are important
These games really fail to stand up to the competition but 2 and 3 are easily the best.
