Well, i think it's always nice to know the background of a themed game because of references. Sometimes you get to learn new things about the show and game story / dialogues / mechanics can make more sense to you - like in this case.
Although it's a great addition, there's no need for it if you're not interested in the anime at all


But I think when you started it anyway you should watch all of SAO because after the GGO arc there comes a little bit more of the SAO/ALO world. ( I always stop rewatching on S02 EP22 and skipping most of the romance / yui parts troughout the whole show - so much lost potential...)

Well, you don't really need to watch the anime to understand the game, which is a good thing. They make a handfull of very subtle references to past arcs and Heathcliff on the SAO side. But aside from that, I feel like the anime had so much potential and it was wasted after the first season, ruined by WAY too many harem and ecchi moments.

As for Accel World, I can't really speak for that anime. I've never seen it. I heard it was pretty decent though. But I have to say my favorite "MMO" type anime would have to be Overlord, it's everything I've ever wanted from an MMO anime. Completely off topic here but we really do need an Overlord game.
