Each character also has the concept of "Quality" though, and that system might interest you.
Quality comes in 5 levels D -> C -> B -> A -> S, with S being the strongest. You can create an unlimited number of D grade characters. Creating higher grade characters can be done a few ways.
1. You can retire a level 20+ character (which deletes them as they leave your guild) to get a "Quality Token". I think you have to be like level 80+ to get an S grade quality token.
2. There are a few side quests that give quality tokens but they are ultra rare.
Quality Tokens can be used on subsequent playthroughs, so you can start a new playthrough with higher quality characters. The number of tokens you have is autosaved but the system is smart enough that you can't save scum it to get unlimited tokens.
Creating a new character at a certain quality level takes 1 token.
Upgrading an existing character from say D -> C takes 2 tokens.
So this is a complex system that you can totally ignore on a "Normal" difficulty playthrough. But it is there for those that want to min-max so they can challenge the game on "Hard" or the brutal "Old School" difficulty. Plus there are 10 post-game super bosses and you will need some serious levels to take them down.
So why bother with the Quality Tokens? First off each character in the game has an "Origin" story and the better quality will give a better title. So instead of your noble being called "Lord Deltaco", maybe he is "Baron Deltaco". More importantly the quality level gives bonus skill points and a bonus to all stat points. This is incredibly powerful as you normally only get 1 skill point per level. But S Rank characters get a skill point bonus between +5 and +10 skill points depending on their background.
Long answer but I wanted to explain the system fully. Like I said the Quality Token system is where you can get some seriously strong characters. Its like a modified version of the reincarnation system from Disgaea in some ways.
Let me know if you have anymore questions!
Appreciate you taking the time to answer my question :)
Can't wait!! :)
It is totally feasible to play on the hardest difficulty level, "Old School", when starting with a D grade party. That said Old School is designed to feel more like an old school 80s dungeon crawler and is pretty hard. You really need to be thoughtful about your party composition and skill choices. If you try to rush things or spam your way through fights without much thought you will get destroyed even with higher grade characters.
Part of the old school challenge isn't just higher enemy stats, its "can't save in the dungeon", "can't lower the encounter rate to zero", and "don't get a free healing of life and mana when you level up".
Challenging some of the post/late game bosses on old school with D grades is super tough but you will be able to rank them up by then.
Can you eventually have a full stable of all 10 classes at S-Rank and maxed stats/skills to pick from with enough work?
There is also a "Title" system that is hard to explain but will become clear once you play the game. Based on the background you pick for a character during character creation, they might have a title in front of their name, (for example a knight would have sir, a noble lord/lady, etc). This Title can also improve when you rank up depending on your background. It is cosmetic but it can be cool to have a mage character that starts the game Adept crazyeagle and at S rank would be Archmage crazyeagle.
Yes you can swap out party members in town so you can certainly have a full party of 10!
You can also pay money in town to respec a players skill points. This way you can re train any of your characters or try new builds. The cost isn't to high and its a cool way to experiment with different setups for a given character class.
I am actually planning on hitting the button for Steam in about 4 hours!
We weren't able to get approved on switch first time we tried but we are going to try again once the game is launched.
I get always fond of my group. I play games from start to end with only one group. I never switch any persons out of it.
And i play always at the hardest difficulty, even seldom with a full group of people, because i had no game yet that was difficult enough for me with a full group. So i will not play at a lower difficulty to play the game, then dismiss my people and use the tokens for a new game with higher difficulty.
I min-max extremly, i love to think how i can make my chars better.
How much tokens you get from the game, if you (like me) never switch any team member out of the team? Can you e.g. make even one char to the highest quality this way?
Can i eventually grind later the tokens, if i switch to another group and powerlevel them? And dismiss them later to get the tokens and invest them at my normal group?
Or can you have only one party and this is not possible?
I have no problem with playing the game at highest difficulty with only D grade party, like stated above i like a challenge. But i would hate it, if i cannot really min-max because of this.
There are other quests late in the game that award A and S Rank tokens.
For the in betweens if you wanted a full S Rank party you would have to do some farming. It isn't to difficult because you can have less than 6 people in your party and if you have fewer than 6 then everyone will get more experience per fight. So if you give a lower level party strong gear they can level up pretty quick.
So yes if you are a min-max gamer you can totally get a fully upgraded party without sacrificing your initial starting party, it will just take some time.
You can switch party members when you are in town at any time. The only requirement is the main character must be in the party because the main character is you and you are the hero of the story after all.
Ohh, i need more free time...
