Additionally, you must have a valid osu! database as well as Options > General > "Use osu!.db database" enabled.
This is not the case when deleting directly from the scoreboard of that map, however -- in that case, only the score selected will be deleted. Deleting scores like this on maps that have since been deleted isn't possible, though, so deleting plays can become very risky under such circumstances.
Deleting scores from unavailable beatmaps works just fine.
You can verify what I'm saying by making a backup of your
/<Steam>/steamapps/common/McOsu/scores.db
/<Steam>/steamapps/common/McOsu/scoresvr.db
and then deleting to your heart's content, while noting how many (pp-)scores are on each beatmap beforehand.
edit: just realized it continues to increase the intensity of the shaking, without limit. maybe set a very high, but still playable limit to it?
Sorry it took me so long to reply to this. Here is a clip from today (January 31st, 2020) of me trying to delete a play on a map I specifically designed to give tons of points on relax, and then deleted after playing. I right click on the play, it kicks me out of the menu, I go back in, click "delete", and then it deletes a completely different play.

Will be fixed with the next update.
The mouse I use makes a clicking sound on press and release. I only pressed mouse left, it just sounded like I was pressing both.
Edit: I'm sorry if I'm being an annoyance with all of these comments. That isn't my intention. If there's a different way that these scores can be deleted that I'm unaware of, just let me know.

P.S.: In osu! this doesn't happen
