Well, realistically it has no ammo or fuel, far better multiplayer due to cross-platform play and asynchronous turns, has a bit more varied game modes and a fantasy theme. Map editor is also pretty strong.
So basically more less a straight-up modernization.
-Fantasy Setting
-A few key mechanics changes, such as different units
-Your character is a unit on the field and your ability depends on where they are on the field and where you aim it.
-online multiplayer
-custom content map / campaign editor is far more extensive than advance wars AND you can share and download content online. You can play any of these custom maps / campaigns in 4-player local OR online!
-The doggies are adorable
Naval units are strong and relatively cheap, however they move much slower than in AW, so having maps with navy feels way less gimped.
Air units on the other hand are strange, because the dragon is your bomber equivalent except it gets 8 movement and has the highest movement in the entire game, making it very hard to prevent hitting at least one of your important units. Luckily it also gets pretty easily oneshot by your anti air units, provided your enemy doesnt take them out before the dragons arrive, in which case your battle is probably screwed anyways.
There are also interior tiles called flagstone, which designate areas where no vehicles and air units may enter. Those are also a pretty interesting addition.
The map editor is hilariously overengineered giving the map maker massive freedom to create unique kinds of gameplay and scenarios. If that isnt enough, theres going to be full fledged mod support like youd know from every other chucklefish game.
