i am not doubting your frustration, but there is in fact a mid game save: simply exit the mission (do NOT push abandon) and it will ask if you wish to resume when you return.
The AI will not be a match in 1Vs1 mirror map match again an human, but It's standard on theses games. The scripted campaign and skirmishes maps are cool, and especially since we have a campaign/map full editor includind scripts and cutscenes in this game, we will find what you search for if you are in the "Advance war - like".
That being said, ITB is also fantastic with its own merits, I highly suggest picking it up some time.
IMPORTANT NOTE : You can lower the difficulty with a difficulty slider to make campaign missions easier. It forces you to only get 1 star in each mission, but if the game is hard to the point of lowering difficulty, you probably won't mind.
