Steam Edition is updated version of game, but GOG is just repack of original CD release.

That timing. The game was on my mind last week and I got a bit sad this hasn't been fixed to work on 64 bit Win 10 etc etc. Now it's here. Wow.

My only criticism of the original was the save checkpoint system.

Could there be in any way an update whereby the chronicler would *ALWAYS* be at the rebel camp? Maybe with a rest&save or rest&save&continue option?

This is a great game, I'd certainly gift this to others.
