does a nail gun count as a pistol or revolver and is there anything I can do to increase the damage further?

The nail-gun does have the cheapest ammo in the game, though. So that's one thing going for it, at least.

Do the story missions in the bar, you get a nice prompt to spend money and upgrade the shop, here is what you can get:

While you can kill things with it, there are better alternatives :)
