Will the series ever get CO-OP?

This is the third game, and even though a female protag is a good move, what the franchise really lacks -- and what could raise it above a title only arousing niche interest -- is co-operative functionality. Indeed, now that the series has more than a single protagonist, co-op must surely be the next port of call...

So, will co-op come as DLC in DsIII, or out-of-the-box in DsIV...?

The devs talked about this extensively. According to them, they are truly dying to make the co-op game. They really want to do it. Unfortunately, they said that since THQ went bankrupt and Vigil closed down + It's been a long ass time since they made a Darksiders, it wouldn't make sense to start off the series with co-op multiplayer. They said they needed to start a bit smaller and if this game is a success either IV will have that co-op or Strife will be the main protagonist in IV and V will have 4 way co-op.
This is all according to interviews done with David Adams, the president of Gunfire Games and ex-president of Vigil.

Darksiders V would make sense to be co-op, but not before that... every horseman should have his own game first and would be the sole hero/b@d@$$ of it.

I agree Darksiders 5 would be a great way to start a 4 play coop horseman story/campaign for sure and I already have my pre-order ready for this one :)! I Love coop and with 4 players you can't go wrong and I don't care which horseman I am all have great powers and weaknesses but hey I will take it anyday. However I do hope they have campaign for sure and maybe mini missions to have a quick run and just have some fun :)!

after all the horsemen are done then probably. at the current moment there is no need since each horsemen is suppose to complete the tasks before them alone. no point in putting in coop when it doesnt fit.

I think after all horsemen are done they could make a new story line for an adventure which includes all for of them but we'll wait and see what happens first.

Agreed, V would be the best one to do since after you get used to each Horseman's playstyle and moveset, the next thing to do is have a co-op where all 4 are their at once against lots of enemys and elarn some new lore along the way. So a 4 person co-op like a brawler would be very interesting to see.
