In Thea 1, beasts and monsters were there own unit. In this version however, most monsters are "equipped" in the pet slot.
Virtually all characters can equip a pet, with the exception of the Vily (as far as I've seen). Some examples of other/better pets that can be found are; Bear (random events, and rare sea events), Wolf (mostly sea events), Wraith (village events, sea events, and rare land events), and Ghosts (rare sea events, and extremely rare land events). There's obviously more, but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. There's other pets as well, though, those are the ones I can remember that come with an actual summon.
A fully maxed out "The Other Ring" also gives you a free Summon Demon skill, which appears automatically favorited, if you manage to craft it with the second Cosmic Shard you get.
Also, in addition to Human, Orc, Goblin, Demon and Undead (Wraith), you can also recruit Dwarves. Each race/class has its own preferred skills, and special abilities, so all are viable. Humans for example, a Hunter will favor Perception, while a Fighter favors Strength, and a Witch will favor Mysticism. Even between different types of demons, they have different stat preferences and skills. For example, a Vily favors Wits with a secondary of Mysticism, while a V... however the heck that wind demon is spelled has a more balanced stat preference, with a slight preference towards Strength.
In addition, if you don't like how most fight, Witch, (Goblin) Beastmaster, and (Elven) Druid all get summoning skills in there standard skill list. You can easily throw those out as fodder so none of your party takes actual damage. lol
