If you go to the dwarves for help, the dwarves ask you to go to an Ice Demon to get a new heart. I won't say more to not give any spoilers, but it was interesting. If you complete the path for them, a dwarf will join you for the final battle and can be invited to join the party upon completion.
In my first playthrough I went to the Goblin island first and ran into a necromancer there who gave me a path to take but I got a gameover after getting the snot kicked out of me on my divine quest and didn't do save scumming to restart it, so I never saw the conclusion of this line yet.
1. Going to the elves and convincing them forge a new heart
2. Going to the elves and then siding with the light bringers
3. Going to dwarves who send you on a quest to forge a heart of ice
4. Going to the orcs or goblins who have you forge a heart of shadow
5. Going to the cave the alchemist knew about, freeing the grand master and having him forge a heart.
I didn't half-way pursue them, though :P. I actually completed multiple different paths (I think). It seemed to use the one I did most recently.
The way the Event editor works, it probably follows whichever is higher in the logic path of the event, regardless of the order in which you worked on them.
