Get a magical character up like a witch from children with high mysticism. If you can't, you can attack them instead for a red challenge instead which should be a lot easier for you.
Being able to deal with them is pretty much your main goal so it can be difficult at the start. Also never settle next to them

1: If you know you can't win a battle you've been forced into, surrender in the combat field. You will fail, but take significantly less damage and the outcome won't punish you so severely. There's no shame in this, even the best of us do this if we need to.

2: Turn down the difficulty settings (*world progression, and *challenge increase). You'd rather play a game and have fun while you learn it than be frustrated because it keeps kicking your ass. Once you learn the mechanics and what works/doesn't work early-game, you'll do much better.

3: Lightbringers for some reason almost always only have a social/spiritual challenge option to fight them *if they initiate the encounter*. Is this bugged? Anyways, your best option to deal with them is to have a decent magic user (healer/zerca, shaman, witch, bandit/scavenger, etc). If you are the one to initiate the encounter, you almost always can fight them in physical combat (usually much easier early-game).

Good luck, and have fun.

No it's not bugged. When a group attacks you they pick the combat option (physical, social or magic) that they are strongest in. Most groups are strongest in physical thus why they attack in physical.

One other tidbit that's more general than your question. Thea2, like Thea1, has a power curve that's very difficult to climb back on to if you fall off. It's really worth your effort to pay attention to every move and action you take in the first 100 turns or so. If you're exploring and levelling and keeping your people alive, you'll hop up on top of that power curve and you can ride it to the end of the game. But if you screw up early, it's really hard to get back. So do your very best to learn how to fight without taking damage; don't waste too much time crafting; get in the habit of gathering food at the end of any turn where you've moved a group near a food node. Make efficient use of your actions, and by the time the Lightbringers start coming out in any quantity 40, 50, or even 100 turns into the game, you'll be ready for them.

thank you for the responses. They are all very helpful, curious, how many turns usually does a normal game take to win and how do you unlock the other Gods?
Lorska Jul 8, 2019 @ 6:28am
When the game ends (win lose or you go to summary to retire) you get God points based on your progress. People finishing the game is highly variable. Some end the game way before turn 100 by picking OP characters and starting equipment. Others take more time or weaker starts and do it in 300-600 turns. Others take it slow and use 1000+ turns

how many God points oes it take to unlock another God?
XenoReaver Jul 8, 2019 @ 7:35am
It costs 3 points. After that the cost goes up by 3 to 6 then 9 and so forth etc etc. Only the last 2 gods Triglav and Nyia can't be unlocked by points.
Imricdaelf120741 Jul 8, 2019 @ 7:44am
IIRC unlocking gods is random and happens one at a time when you beat the main game?

The game is considered beaten after the main quest is finished. Of course there is more to do, but that's beside the point.
A quick game is from ~100 to ~200 turns.
Average is from ~250 to ~400
Long is from ~500 to ~1000
Slow/Turtle/etc >~1000
OP start, exploiting mechanics, etc.. can beat the game in under ~100 turns (physical is easiest)

Figure a typical game nets 5 to 15 points.

...You make a valid point, and yet I feel like an idiot for not realizing this lol.

thank you very much for the help.

Unlocking the non-point gods (Triglav and Nyia) isn't really random, I think. It's supposed to be completing the main quest "Lightbringers" unlocks Nyia, while completing the "Divine Path" quest unlocks Triglav.

However, the Nyia unlock doesn't always seem to trigger for everyone. I thought it had something to do with meeting the cultists who stole the earth heart, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

hhmm,,,thak you for the info, this game has alot of things going on with it,,i like it so far,i will say i dont love games that you have to unlock characters in this case Gods.It unfortunately turns it into sorta of a grind fest.
Imricdaelf120741 Jul 8, 2019 @ 4:36pm
If that's how you feel, I would suggest looking for mods that unlock the characters/traits/gods. Keep in mind though, mods for this game are only just beginning to show up.
Thorgot Jul 8, 2019 @ 5:35pm
i have looked at a few of them. For now ill just keep playing and see how things go, i dont have tons of free time to play so thats why i frown on games that make you play tons of hours to unlock things. Thats my biggest gripe on this game so far.
