It is unplayable in this state.
Did NOT have this issue prior to update (installed about a month ago, and this was the first update I saw since then). What gets me is that the update claims to have FIXED this very issue, and instead it has CREATED it for me.
Edit: Note that I do not own the DLC.
When it happened, I had one NPC walking towards checkout with their item, a few in the shop and one just entering. While that last one was still in the process of entering the shop, I walked to the door and held A to close it. This correctly caused the idle NPCs and the one that was entering to exit again. As expected, the one still waiting for checkout did not leave, but waited to buy their item. I went to the register and sold the item, after which the NPC left the shop. After that, the game softlocked.
When I exited to the main menu, health bar, backpack etc. were visible on top. Entering the game again, that day had been reset. This means no one should be stuck forever, but it's still annoying to have to re-do a whole day of sale.
Not closing the shop while anyone is still waiting for checkout should be enough to avoid this!
