Why does the pendant starts blinking?

After a while it just starts blinking from the lower right corner, why`?

I have observed that it blinks when the backpack is full, like an indication to go back to town.

May be, I not really sure. Now that I think, the ghost reason makes more sense.

The "Ghost" has his own timer in the bottom left when you're running out of time =)
