Will there be any, or will we be stuck with a static protaganist?

For now there are no plans of adding character customisation at all. We want the game to be about the story of Will :)

Is there any reason why it has to be "Will" specifically? For a game with a lot of fancy cutscenes and/or voice acting I can understand wanting to keep it more immersive with a set protagonist, but for a game like this, character customization is (presumably) as simple as having the game "type" a different name and allowing both genders, extra hairstyles/colours, skin colours, etc, is it not? The plot shouldn't have to change for that to be an option.

A lot of people out there prefer to be able to play a character they specifically relate to in a game like this, since it's an RPG of sorts, rather than being forced to play someone else's. Take Stardew Valley for example; it allows you to make your own personal farmer, and that gets people more attached to the idea of playing the game and expanding their farm since it's a character the player made themselves. I've watched quite a few Youtube videos on this game so far and I like what I see in terms of gameplay progression and mechanics, but the main reason I haven't bought the game yet myself is purely because I don't want to HAVE to play "Will" when it would be much more enjoyable to play "WIll's" story with my own character. Call it being "picky," but there are plenty of other games that offer such a feature, and that can be the deciding factor for a lot of RPG players.

I usually see players that want a game to be like they want it to be, but not as the dev created it. This game will not gain anything from a custom player character. It will be an empty mechanic with no further impact on the gameplay.

If you cannot get into a game because it won't allow you to customize your character, then there is something wrong with your opinion on how games should be, contrasted with how they are designed. It makes you look somwhat shallow that you cannot get in the shoes of another character because it is not like you wanted it.

Learn to love the game as it is, and criticize the elements that warrant it, not something you want in a whim.

The popularity of many big name JRPG's contradicts this. When was the last time a Final Fantasy game actually let you create your own party? It was more than 20 years ago. There are, and have been, plenty of RPG's over the years that rail roaded you into playing a specific character. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of that, but in the case of a story where it matters I can accept it.

However, in this case there could have at least been the option of a female protaginist for those that wished to use it instead. As gender doesn't seem to be a big factor in the story, the character could have been either, so why not the option to chose? Will or Willow?

That's fair enough, although quite a number of players would prefer to at least to have the option, Metal Gear Solid V did this really well, where for the story mode you play the main character's story, then after completing the game, you can choose whichever character you wanted. Maybe the option to play as Will's descendants? I definitely don't the harm in at least giving players the option. I prefer Will, but I know others might not, it just adds variety, just like how I have multiple armor sets when I get fed up of wearing the same thing over and over.

Thats sad. :/ it sucks that all these cute games focus around male characters, id for once like to see one that either has a male/female options or hust a female option. Why are we always slept on. Its 2024 for gods sake, gender options have been around since 2012. 😭

So people are shallow because they want to have a character that they can more easily project onto, to get that good story immersion? People are shallow because they want to be able to feel like they are the character? I mean... thats some bs if ive ever heard it.

You claim its an empty mechanic, but the fact is, its not empty, wills appearance has nothing or very little to do with the game, being able to change that would just allow people to feel like their character resembles them. The mech would work exactly as it is supposed too while also fullfilling the role it was made for.
