Gamespy is dead. This thread is a couple of years old.
To play multiplayer, you'll need to use third-party programs like Gamemaster, Tungle, whatever. They're free and provide the front-end to join multiplayer. Gamemaster is probably the most popular.
(All they really do is provide a light front-end and forward the original IP to their servers.)
