How do you change MP team?

I've been trying to find this out like crazy and can't, on MP servers pretty much every time there is only one team listed where you can spectate, auto assign, or join the team, and I can't find a way of changing it. Sometimes mashing wasd or arrow keys can manage to change it but I can't find out how to do it, and it's driving me nuts.

Also off topic, but how the hell do so many people not know how to get in a damn ship? Too often I see half the team running around the hangar.

Server administrators, for popular servers never ever use player select teams because things will get unbalanced fast. You cannot change teams on auto assign, but getting an assigned team depends on how many existing players on each team, the team with less men has newer players assigned to it. If you find player select servers you can from the beginning pick your team, and when you are respawning, you can click the team icon above the troop selection to swap sides.

Hm, so they just disable it, that's a pain in the ass. It's even done on puny servers.
