Does multiplayer still work?

I am considering buying this game since it is on sale, but if it doesn't support online multiplayer anymore, I don't think I'll buy it. I heard the servers were going to shut down late in July. If this is true then can people host their own servers and play over Lan or vpns like hamachi?

There are 2 new master server replacements. FreeGST will be operational after gamespy shuts down at the end of the month http://swgohome.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6297
the most popular servers in North America will be using that.

In Europe it appears that Gamemaster may be the best choice for a master server replacement. http://gameshare.co/gamemaster

You can use either one or both if you wish. GameRanger and Tunngle are probably okay choices if you just want to play a small 2 player game with some buddies.

yes, even if official servers are shut down, use of a third party LAN program (hamatchi for ex) to continue playing with friends.

Battlefront is still super fun in singleplayer I play single more then muliplayer. Single is still fun (With Mods of course.)

I was able to connect to a server not GameSpy hosted. Bummer though populated maps are more limited now.

IMPORTANT : How to play on multiplayer servers when the servers are closed
How you know; Gamespy,some EA game's servers and others editors whose closed servers prevent you to join the multiplayer servers ( theses services are off). But there are 2 solutions if you want to play online at all these games (battlefront 2, Battlefield 1942, BF2, and a hundred games) :
- the first , is a short program called "gameranger" (you can find easily on internet)
- the second, is a short program called "gametracker" (you can find easily on internet)
these 2 programs are free, easily to install, use and permit you to join a lot of servers and players
I am disapointed that Steam don't permit to play online for all these games.
