However, the B2s (Super Battle Droids) would totally annihilate those suckers. They've got heavy armor.
Everyone in the OT seems to have terrible aim, not just stormtroopers. Lots of people say that the Stormtroopers engaging the main characters have been told to allow them to proceed, but even on the Tantive IV they and the Rebels are horrendous shots.
The Rebels have one chokepoint to shoot at the end of a relatively short hallway, and yet once the door's blown down, at best they only kill three stormtroopers while the Imperials also aren't able to take them all down.
Eventually, the quality of the soldiers significantly increased, and non-humans began joining the Stormtrooper corps (keep in mind that Disney most likely considers this non-canon already).
It really depends on what kind of Stormtrooper you're talking about, depending on different eras. I highly doubt that a Stormtrooper from the Galactic Civil War era would have an easy time against droids from the CIS. You have to consider the fact that the majority weren't Jango Fett clones, and if they ever had to deal with Droidekas... well, let's just hope they never have to face those things.
The Galactic Empire's infantry wouldn't put up much of a fight against a well-armed army that uses massive ammounts of droids. Both sides would have equal strength in such a conflict. However, that balance would be shifted dramatically if the Empire uses their highly advanced war machines, like Star Destroyers and AT-STs.
Well it really depends what point in time you're talking about. By the time the Battle of Endor happened, there weren't many clones left and vice versa for the Battle of Yavin. If the droids still have the factories, they'll win. That's the thing with the droids. They really aren't that great, but they can outnumber a force greatly.
Yet none of this really explains why Stormtroopers are inept at eliminating close-range targets, despite having computer-assisted optics and top-of-the-line equipment (EU sources).
As for the topic: Are you referring to the standard B1 Battle Droid, or later and more advanced models? The Commando Droids and Droidekas seem more than a match (individually and in a group) for Stormtrooper squads.
As for having bad aim, I guess the only reason why they were terribles shots in the movies was for plot reasons. They were absolutely terrible in the movies and behaved like idiots. They hardly ever shot from the shoulder and instead shot from the hip. They rarely take cover and just run around like headless chickens, firing shots like there's no tomorrow.
You also have to consider the times when the original movies wrere made, when film ratings were more strict. If Lucas portrayed the Stormtroopers in a more realistic manner as heartless, cold and well trained soldiers who killed without mercy (which is how most of them are portrayed in the EU, including books), Star Wars would have reached a smaller audience. Portraying them as a bunch of unproffessional idiots helped to lighten up the film rating.
As far as Stormtrooper armor acting as space kevlar, every single blaster shown and fired in the OT immediately knocks over and/or kills the Stormtrooper, even the supposedly weaker weapons of the Rebel Alliance (even the pistols o,o)
I can't argue with that. The main characters are eternally protected by plot armor... but this doesn't explain why they can't hit a thing when the plot would demand them to wreck the opposition (see Tantive IV and Hoth).
Ehh, not necessarily. Major reforms to what was allowed in movies were established in 1962 (which actually now allowed plots to actually let the bad guys win), and there wasn't an official rating board. All the OT films were just rated G/PG, and I doubt showing Stormtroopers take aim or take cover every now and then in plot-critical firefights would have seriously hurt the range to which Star Wars would present itself to. They could still be mooks, but they could also be smart mooks.
With that being said, I prefer to imagine the Stormtroopers as mediocre-skilled soldiers at best, but highly capable of teamwork, undeniably loyal, and persistent. The films just make them look silly.
If any of the armies of Star Wars show any competence, it's during the prequel era, for sure. B1s are the only real downside to the Separatist Army, but other than that, the pitched battles against the Grand Army of the Republic look brilliant, especially in Episode III. Kashyyk comes to mind.
