There is hero only servers if that's want want. Everything is community ran.
There is not a huge amount of players but you can almost always find a server with people to play with.
I got this game on CD - ROM over a decade ago and I still play it from time to time. Yeah it kicks ass. One of the best Star Wars games and best Star Wars shooters out there (and that's saying something. LucasArts has a long history of releasing amazing Star Wars shooters, from Dark Forces to Republic Commando.)
It's like if you took the Battlefield formula, added all the love of Star Wars into it (the good, pre-Disney Star Wars), added the ability to be jedi/sith, and fight in space--even boarding the enemy cruiser and destroy it from inside--it's just amazing. And that's just the base game. What took an amazing, timeless game and ascended it to LEGENDARY status is the dedicated, passionate modding community which persists to this day. This game has about as many mods for it as Skyrim, nearly as much as Doom. And the vast majority of them are high quality and worth experiencing.
Pandemic, the developers behind the game, later released Lord of the Rings: Conquest, which aimed to recreate the success of Battlefront for that series. It's a good game, but there was some special lightning in a bottle that was the first two Battlefront games, and even the excellent Conquest couldn't quite fully recapture that. That Battlefront magic will never die, and no matter how many times EA tries in vain to replicate it, they simply can't.
I'll say this, too. The games, even played totally vanilla without any mods, were always quite nice looking. Of course, you have to remember the context of when they released, but they look very nice on their own even without any mods, and with mods they look unbelievably good.
Sadly it seems they are intentionally not putting the games on sale anymore because that would make the Classic Collection even more pointless than it already is. They are doing the same thing for that stupid Dark Forces remaster.
Sure thing! Whenever you do pick it up, you're in for a treat. Even the multiplayer is still played. It actually ended officially in 2014 when original server host GameSpy shut down, but GOG resurrected the online for both Battlefront 1 and 2 a few years back, around 2018 I want to say. Battlefront 1 is usually completely dead, but you can always find some people in the sequel, which was always more popular. In recent days, we've even had full servers of nearly 60 players going. Unfortunately, the server hosts tend to do no space maps and heroes turned off, which is a bummer, but the fact that the game is still so populated for its age says something.
We didn't just "let it die", they released a shit unfinished Remaster of the game for quick profit. They deserve to crash.
I'd rather settle for an older yet far more enjoyable video game where you won't have to spend a dime in order to have a good time.
