The online still works but it's a bit janky due to the netcode, but I still found it somewhat playable casually, takes some time adjusting to it. Most of the player count is either people idling on the menu or playing in singleplayer / mods, but we had a little player count spike due to the classic collection reminding people of the game and people are hopping on before the release of the collection. It's about 120 on the super low end and the 24 hour peak today was 690+.
Singleplayer is fine once you install a few mods to help with the UI and stuff, and there's a good amount of singleplayer mods to play around with. Online is a bit more shaky though.
You could wait to see if the online for the new collection coming out is an improvement to the current steam release though, I'm mainly just waiting to see the reception for it before playing for more than an hour, and I'm guessing a lot of the people who own the current steam release are probably going to do that as well.
Last time i played a few months ago there are games, but most were Hero matches. Hope the Classic collection, if good, will up the player numbers and match variety.
Shame they didn't implement co-op for story mode, would be nice do play with other 3 friends front start to end...
