Yes you can use mods while still being able to play online

Download this unofficial patch for the game you need this version as it allows you to play with mods and play online note it may still crash if you exit out of a match/server from my experience however you can play online which is nice. With previous unofficial patches you couldn't even play online at all with mods installed.

[HARD REQUIREMENT] Install the shader patch to avoid shader bugs and issues since this game is really old and outdated it has some shader graphical issues that were never fixed by the devs offically i 900% reccomend that you install this mod it's very simple to install simply open up the file once downloaded with 7zip or winrar and drag everything into your gamedata folder and you are done launch the game and now the game wont have shader bugs.

Install the remaster .exe this comes in different parts this mod will remaster units , planets , and GCW space.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WHEN YOU INSTALL THE UNOFFICAL REMASTER PATCH V 1.5 R2 IT COMES WITH THE FAKE CONSOLE TO ACCESS IT SIMPLY CLICK ESC WHEN IN THE GAME AKA WHEN YOU ARE IN AN ACTUAL LEVEL YOU WILL SEE TEXT THAT SAYS [FAKE CONSOLE] IF YOU HAVE INSTALLED EVERYTHING CORRECTLY THAT BEING THE OPTIONAL REMASTERED FILES THAT I LINKED YOU YOUR GAME SHOULD LOOK GOOD AND YOU CAN CHANGE YOU SKIN VIA FAKE CONSOLE. HOWEVER DO KNOW THAT IF YOU'D RATHER NOT USE ANY OF THE REMASTERED STUFF I HAVE LINKED THEN YOU MAY LOOK FOR A DIFFERENT SKIN CHNAGER FOR THE VANILLA TEXTURES.

The unofficial remaster patch allows you to use mods and allows you to play online as well go ahead and download the unofficial patch that I have linked you. You wont crash when you try and play multiplayer.

From my testing no the game should still run fine it does on my end.
