Why does the server browser suck so bad?

It seems to me like the server browser displays, at most, 16 servers, never more. Refreshing seems to do nothing, it only shows the same servers too you, which coupled with the fact that there is no 'direct connect' thing, makes it pretty difficult to get a friend to play in a game with you. there are a few major graphical glitches with the server browser I don't get anywhere else as well, and the 'ping' column always displays 0.
The server browser is hardly functional. Does anyone know of a mod that makes the server browser work?

Not many games are good enough to buy twice in my opinion, which makes this even more of a shame. If they fixed the issues with multiplayer this game could get big again.
