Microphone activates in the options tab
I was looking around in the options, and when I clicked on online, I started hearing what sounded like a car or motor. I was confused at first and went "Hmm?" Then I heard myself through my headphones. Since when was VoIP a thing in BF2? Why is my game now doing what it never has done before?

VoIP in BF2 was a thing, I remember using it to talk to my clan buddies way back in the day. Sound quality was horrible though lol.

VoIP is built into the game? You're not talking about team speak or discord right?

Yes, the built-in VoIP system, it was there before just wasn't very good. As you mentioned, TS or Discord would be better.

Thought I should mention, if you want to prevent it from happening follow these steps: Start -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound -> Recording -> Right-Click Stereo Mix -> Disable.

I always thought it strange that to fix BF2 sometimes you needed a microphone plugged in (or anything in the microphone port). This might be a hidden artifact from the console.
