Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (Classic, 2005)

A question about the Beam (Award) Sniper Rifle.
I'm just going to cut to the chase - I don't snipe much in battlefront. When it comes to snipers, that shot needs to count, and I generally find the Battlefront snipers to be too low power for my liking, and I'd actually much prefer a one-shot per reload like the rockets than the lower power semi-auto snipers in Battlefront. (In other words, I vastly prefer guns like the Mantis or Widow from Mass Effect 2/3, compared to options like the Viper or Raptor from the same games.)

Anyways, needless to say, since I almost never take the sharpshooter, I almost never use the Beam Sniper. Make sense? Well, just because I ALMOST never use it, doesn't mean I never do.

I actually just took the Award Sniper out for a spin - I was playing on Kamino (which I decided was the perfect map for sniping) and while it was certainly more powerful (two body shots did the trick on average, instead of closer to 5 because the default sniper is headshot or GTFO) I noticed something horrible; it had a maximum range! I could snipe from farther away with my pistol! The double zoom was also gone.

It basically turned the sniper rifle into a single shot variant of the blaster rifle with less range, for all intents and purposes. Except one that penetrates multiple enemies (I got 3 kills with one shot once - two of which were team kills since I didn't expect it to penetrate like that.)

ANYWAYS, sorry for rambling while explaining my preferences, onto my question!

I know that once you reach Legendary status, perks remain permanent, like always having the precision pistol instead of the Blaster/Commando pistol. However, the Beam Sniper is such a drastic change from... well... SNIPING, I find myself needing to ask if there's a way to just flat out disable the beam sniper or otherwise switch back to the original?

Don't get me wrong - I get that the beam sniper is a great weapon in it's own right, but most situations when I'd get the most out of it are situations I'd take a soldier instead of a sharpshooter. The limited range just defeats the purpose of using it as a "sniper" and what I personally expect to see happening is the Sharpshooter using the precision pistol to snipe while using the beam sniper for more standard range combat - which kind of defeats the purpose since basically everyone gets the pistols besides the engineers and some specialty classes like the Imperial Officer, Wookiee, and so on.

i dont think there is a way to disable that award if you receive it just kill yourself. Award is gone

All right, thanks. I'd rather not murder my Kill/Death ratio on suicides, (I normally don't care but I'm on such a hot streak that I want to keep it as high as possible for awhile just to pad my ego) but at least I don't play the sniper much.

Is it not permanent at Legendary status, then?

Actually, I noticed something that I hadn't noticed before that changes my opinion of this a bit.

I don't know if it's EVERY sharpshooter, but I was playing Galactic Conquest as the rebels and noticed, "Hey, this character is actually running really fast." I don't remember if the others have the same speed (On the one hand, I'd assume they're fairly even, but on the other, I don't remember speedy sniperclones zipping around) but using that speed to close in for an accurate and powerful middle range weapon is actually pretty appealing to me.

So I guess, either way, I'm okay with it?

If you unlock it 64 or so times (if I'm correct) it will stay permanent. But you can create another user account if you would like to snipe normally.
Also... Snipers can cause a lot more damage than you think if they have all the awards except for Beam Rifle.
I'm pretty much the best sniper female in multiplayer, so I know how the class works. Its also one of the main classes for competitive tournaments and events within clans and such.
The Beam Rifle is pretty bad, but as long as you don't unlock it or if you do, as long as you don't switch to your pistol, you won't have it.

Also, a little tip, move as much as possible and don't camp in one spot. In multiplayer, people usually take out any snipers that camp in one spot.

And I wanted to add; Kamino is perfect for sniping.
But so is; Coruscant, certain parts of Death Star, Endor, Geonosis, Hoth, Utapau, Yavin 4, Felucia, Kashyyyk, Mygeeto, Nabbo, Dagobah, Mos Eisley, and certain parts of Polis Massa (I realize I pretty much mentioned nearly all the maps. Tantive IV is more difficult to snipe in but also fun). There are some mod maps pretty great for sniping also, like Bespin, Alderaan, Rhen Var.

Also, snipers are pretty fast at moving. Not just the Rebel sniper.

Anyway, if you ever need any sniping tips, let me know

Here's my last competitive sniper video I took with a friend;

*thumbs up* Thanks for all the input. I wasn't sure if I was just not getting something obvious about the Beam Rifle or what. And I guess it makes sense that War Hero in particular would be a massive boon to a class like the sniper, which would explain why I always found the damage to be a little low.

Honestly, as a fan of fast-moving, high risk characters, I'm starting to really warm up to the sniper now that I've noticed how quickly it really moves. (It also helps that I feel the Clone Sniper generally looks pretty cool - and the rebel sniper is sometimes female, which is a nice change of pace.) So, between the speed and the aesthetics, I'm now officially training up with the class. I'm not intending to main it or anything, but I'd like to be at a similar skill level with every class.

Before now, I basically used the blaster rifle and pistol for anything resembling "sniping" (I mean, the blaster rifle can basically span Kamino's entire exterior and still be decently reliable if they're sitting still - such as in a turret, and only gets more accurate when upgraded.) Needless to say, it's a bit of a learning curve, so thanks for the map suggestions! I really needed those, since Kamino is a bit too... exploitable? I mean, between the turrets and all... heh. If anything, it's mainly good for unlocking the beam rifle, which isn't exactly the point, apparently.

(My only concern is that while getting good with the sniper, I'll unlock the permanent Beam Rifle, but oh well. I'm sure I can keep a secondary profile saved in a zip folder with everything else unlocked but that, and just replace it any time it happens. Or I can just try to get good with it for the bragging rights, who knows what I'll end up doing?)

But yeah, thanks again. Very much appreciated. I haven't watched the video just yet since I'm still playing and occasionally alt-tabbing out to see if I got an email I was waiting for, but I'll check it out once I close the game.

Np :)

Kamino is really great to snipe in but there's tons of spots in other maps that are just as great. smaller maps are more challenging, but also fun once you get the hang of it and stay alive.

I personally don't like the Beam Rifle, so, switching profiles or keeping it is entirely up to you.
anytime and I hope you enjoy it :P
