I'm probably going to pull the trigger on the Organ Quarter, because my intuition and glances at Twitter streams, etc., look solid, but I'm in a silly place where I don't want to spoil myself on the game, but I also don't want to buy it if it's a mild experience or a short experience.
Even though the 95%+ positive score speaks for itself, there really aren't that many reviews that make a direct assessment on the "subjective scare factor", the "quality factor", and the "length factor" -- and honestly, if I had poured love into a game like this, I'd be disgruntled that no professional outlets seem to be reviewing it at all.
Im about 2 hours in and apparently half way through or so. No i HATE horror vr games, Chair in a room, Paranormal activity, whatever, they all were too much for me. But this is actually ok. Its frightening, but theres no jumpscares. Enemies are threatening, but manageable and a gun does make you feel much more secure. Theres quite a bit of back tracking, exploration and some lite stealth, but overall if you like Silent Hill or old resident evils (even RE7) then thats a goos comparison.
This game is something different from the vast majority of 'modern' horror games.
This game isn't about stuff jumping out to cheap-scare surprise you, or about un-killable monsters endlessly chasing you down hallways til you get tired of it.
This game is about a creeping sense of dread- a hesitation that builds up each time you each out to turn a doorknob, worried about what you're going to find on the other side *this* time.
In this game, you can 100% know where an enemy is, you can have a fully loaded gun that you *know* will be able to kill whatever it is in a few well-aimed shots- but you're still going to have to steel yourself for each encounter, and you *still* might yell outloud when things go down (it happened to me more than once in 2 hours or so, and I don't consider myself a yell-y kind of guy)
The sound is *fantastic* and adds to the game in a way you almost can't even imagine. Also, I'd claim this has got the creepiest monster design I've seen in years - both in how they look, and in how they move.
You cannot go wrong with this game if you have even a passing interest in horror.
edit:
Agreed. It was unsettling at times for sure, but I don't think I found it to be "scary" either (especially not if we're comparing it to Organ Quarter)
Here's my initial gameplay with impressions:

Horror and VR mix very well, but we've been lacking horror games that actually have satisfying gameplay and aren't just the typical "run through a haunted house while collecting things/searching for clues" type deal. You may feel less scared during this game than you do from say, Paranormal Activity, but you'll be enjoying yourself more with the gameplay.
Exactly, it's having a menu and items that changes a lot.
