Those are common in some states as well as in Europe. This way it can respond fast to scenes etc.
UK use cars to do a assessments to determine if an ambulance is needed or not :)

UK use them also as a department called Rapid Responce if someone is having a cardiac arrest the smaller cars/suvs can get there alot faster

I have not seen this in the states myself.. The call comes in, and the call center dispatches the EMS ambulance. Mostly it is the Paramedics that tend to get the call most, which they are only the Fire Department. The Paramedics are legally trained to provide advanced medical treatment on scene via contact with the hospital with a doctor, to stabilize a victim before transport. Which in many states the fire department uses its own ambulance. Were EMS is limited and is it's own service company not part of the hospital. Matter in fact I seen them get used the most for transport services than anything else. Besides a basic ambulance service. The only group I have seen on certain accident is ESDA, but this is not a EMS service. They are like extra help for traffic control in certain towns that provide them.

How ever I didn't know the UK sends a car to a emergency medical call to make a determine if a ambulance is required.

I never seen as supervisor EMS car in the US i am a truck driver i would have seen it by now.
May be in the UK they use EMS cars to see if a ambulance is needed but over far as I know they have cars and SUVs that work with the police and fire the department is ether aponited by the town city county and state if the place chooses to do so the deprtment is called ESDA or EMA
they sand for Emergency Service and Disater Agency or Emergency Magement Agency
They assit in sercha nd rescue traffic control when it comes to accidents and Fire take charge in the event of a major disater such as and earthquake or tornado do weather spotting do crowd control when a major event such as a parade they pimary are a vonlter service with the town city county state in the US
The only other car that would be a EMS car is known as a medic car these are long station wagons that are bulid on hurse platform that far as i know they where an old type of ambluance
that where used in the 1970s and older that they haven't use since the vans that you see now became popluar

It's pretty common here in NC. My town has a few EMS SUVS, and I know the surrounding ones do as well.

Alberta Health/Calgary EMS uses them as fast response vehicles here. If traffic's heavy or there's no nearby available ambulance (this happens a lot here), an SUV with a paramedic goes to the scene as a first responder to try and stabilize the situation/patient.

Me personally, I rather call the Paramedics over EMS....

Just wanna throw it out there... Paramedic is a level of training provided to Emergency Medical Service professionals. They're the same thing. Any Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance is going to have a paramedic-trained technician on board.

the United States does in fact use EMS/FIRE Suvs and cars. I am a volunteer FF and we use them as supervisor/administration vehicles.

Not stepping on anyone's toes but...

Paramedics or EMS, is just the service ie. The ambulance dispatched to the accident scene when someone calls the E#.

EMTs, are the people who hop out and try 'putting you back together' or getting you to a hospital.

Yes. And a paramedic is a level of training an EMT can undergo. EMT-P is what they're generally called here. That's all I meant. :P

Ah, I wasn't aware of the -P designation very interesting. I'm not aware of that designation here in the states. Very cool though.

Also to add to the OP... the police here in AZ use SUVs as well. They have crown vics and impalas for undercover and regular patrol. But they mostly drive around in the SUVs these days.

Actually it's the exact same in AZ. EMT-B(asic), EMT-I(ntermediate), EMT-P(aramedic). Though different by states, yeah. Most of them classify paramedics as its' own class, just the highest training level.

The Fire Dept. has trained paramedic units and usually are first on scene. Our ambulance service sucks here they keep getting ripped on for bad response times.
