script kiddy
Hi all.

I'm a total noob/script kiddy, When it involves these types of games, but eager to learn. I'm torn between this game and Hacknet? hopefully a more experience player will put me on the right path to which one i should buy first.

They're extremely different games, hacknet is a linear story puzzle game based on hollywood hacking, grey hack is a sandbox simulation game based on real hacking.

It really just depends what you're looking for.

Maybe a solo play through would be the way to go.

Grey Hack is an MMO, there's a singleplayer mode, but it's just your own private server. If you're looking for a properly singleplayer game then hacknet's probably more what you're looking for.

No matter what experience you have: Linux, or a full-stack programmer, nothing is going to change how these games are radically different. They do not play the same at all. People have already adequately described the differences to you. If you don't understand the answers, I would suggest you ask a more detailed question.

Maybe there is a hidden question in what you're asking? Like, "do I have enough experience to enjoy this game?" You can only download this game and find out. I will tell you that you DEFINITELY have enough experience to play Hacknet. Whether you would enjoy either of these games is up to you.

Hackmud is much more similar to this game (real scripting), but I don't recommend it. It has some serious problems. The first review explains them.

This is more to do with real hacking. It's not really a game. It's basically real hacking in a virtual world. So you hack websites, banks, emails and steal money without the consequences of real life. It's not really something you want to play if you have no real knowledge of hacking. You basically need some degree of IT expertise to even be able to play the game as intended (making scripts and breaking into hard to break in security).

It's honestly kind of boring and there's only 56 people max who play this game (which you 80% of the time won't even come across.).

I don't know what hacknet is, but I think you would maybe enjoy that more if you're not a full fledged IT technician.

I have finished Hacknet multiple times and I have too much time on Greyhack. Hacknet is just fun if you like 'hacking games'. It's mostly about solving puzzles and typing commands fast, basically feeling like a hacker. Greyhack is more about doing more real hacking, and very real coding. It could teach you a lot about coding and the hacking, similar to real life, can be complicated and overwhelming at first, but can get very interesting after a while
Get both is a option as well. Grey Hack for learning / honing skills, Hacknet for when you feel like playing a 'hacking' game that has a story line. Also with Hacknet there are player made stories, and you can learn to make one yourself, which is pretty neat. Both games are fun.
