What do Souls and King Urns do?

I have about 5 souls I think (5 inside the little head next to your health) and I've found countless Kings Urns but I have no idea what they do lol. Any answers that clear this up will be great, thank you!

kings urns unlock god mode cheat. there is 5 in every level. the souls have a dual purpose, they act as lives and they can be used with the omniheart to shoot a really powerful explosion (great against bosses)
