Why and when does this became a problem? This is what made games like this great! Look at what we have now: a game with 4-5 business types - shallow like a pond.
Speaking of which, City of Gangsters is in Alpha at the moment and due out later this year. Much less focus on combat than is Empire of Sin, but most definitely pitching at the management / tycoon audience. Added to my wishlist to keep an eye on it.
I do not know your age, but in those old games I´ve played for days or weeks. Gangsters-Organized Crime was not very friendly for beginners at all. The manual and tutorial just gave you the basics and if you would have wanted to find out, which legal businesses would work best as a camouflage for the illegal shops, without any advice cheat/book, it would have taken you probably weeks/months in real life. I used to buy only one or two games per year then (1998/99) and usally focused for quite a while on them. But if you have a normal work rythm (40 hours per week) , there might be two hours left for gaming and maybe weekend, and only, if a game is really good. I don´t waste hours on weak or boring games anymore these days and that is what Empire of Sin does okay: it´s easy to learn, while giving beginners some satisfaction. Original Gangsters easily needed about half an hour just to plan the next-in-game-week, then there was an action part to execute your plans on the map. The results of your earlier mistakes could reveal five hours playtime later, when you finally realized, that you had allowed other gangs to expand too much and have not been aggressive enough yourself, to keep up with them by any chance. You could not play and win it in one game session and if you left it for a while, it took a lot of time to get in again. It seemed great and it was indeed complex, but it lacked the fun somehow.
Well, I did buy the original Gangsters back in the days and had not much time gaming next to school (new medium, bad to spend too much time on - at least everybody said so^^). But I'd argue that the "sense of pride and accomplishment" (pun intended) is actually stronger/better/more impactful if you actually had to figure it out through work.
Where is the fulfillment in Empire of Sin? Everything is clear from the start, the mechanics are 1-dimensional and the available opportunities to actually tailor your "Empire" to the various "Sins" is not existing.
Its just so disheartening to see a decade old game that is so much deeper and more rewarding than a "modern" game. They had a huge chance and could have even used more from the original Gangsters (various front businesses, illegal businesses, laundring money, etc.) and learned more from the mistakes of "Omerta".
If you have nothing else to play it's a fun game, but it's not well balanced and has a lot of glitches.
If you have other things to play, just wait, give it 6 months and see if they roll out the promises fixes they are working on.
Some people have patience to wait, others don't and will just keep complaining.
Okay, I can agree in most points with you here. I was always a fan of rather complicated, complex games. I prefer a Crusaders Kings 2 over a CK3 at the moment, because I know that the new version is looking better and is easier to learn, but it cannot have the deep level of the grown up CK2 with all it´s DLCs yet, for example. And of course it is much more satisfying to win, play or master a difficult complex game in the longer run, then an easy simple one. I was dissapointed after noticing all the negative reviews about Empire of Sin, because I have hoped and expected for a modern and better Gangsters 1. Well, it´s not, yet.
But while it took me 20 hours (youtube tutorials included) or more to learn the mechanics of CK2 (or the original Gangsters without any youtube at all) well enough for knowing what really was going on, the learning part goes by just playing Empire of Sin. You don´t have to learn or know anything specific before at all, people can take some fun out of it instantly. It´s absolutly beginners friendly. Of course that is very often a minus for strategic/management/simulation fans, if complexity has been sacrificed for a potential bigger audience. As long as you have not realized all the flaws of the game yet, when it will become pretty boring and demotivating to replay, it can be a good looking atmospheric experience (at least it was to me), where the X-COM style fights deliver also a good part of battle action. (that part is imo better than in original Gangsters)
Because I know, how long it can take to learn/master a full grown up classical Paradox game, I have decided to get EoS right from the release state. Then I would be already in it, when it might become more complex in the future, while not having to wait for a sale or any DLC to finally give it a try.
But after about 25 hours game time now, im kinda stuck with the repetitive minor unskippable battles, I am just not motivated to play anymore, before the next patch. I do not know, if they will ever fix this game to it´s great potential, but hey, the publisher is still Paradox and they have for a sure a tradition to pimp games up in the long run.
And I have still the original Gangsters here, but every time I wanted to replay it, I thought after a short time: Nah, sorry, this feels a bit like playing a dinosaur like Civiliation 3 again. It´s mostly fun for the sake of the good old times, but there are much better options today to spend your time. It feels old fashioned, slow and over complicated today. It also tried to want and offer too much ( complex simulation, management, action, atmosphere all together), it could not really deliver in a satisfying way.
This is also the big difference: at those times there were not that many (good) alternative games available at all, so we took, what was there and tried to get as much as possible from it. It was worth to learn a difficult game, because there was the time to focus on it for days/weeks then. Today there is only a very limited amount of time left, so you have to choose wisely, which game might deserve this attention or even a big effort to first learn the mechanics. So, to me it´s not a question of money anymore, but a question of time, and am I willing to give it.
