Ugh, let us have a great singleplayer game in this style before we go there please.
What I like in GOC was the fact to manage every single action, before and during the week (we can choose to finally surrender an order or wait, depending the live situation). I also like the fact that we can kidnap and corrupt mostly anyone we want in the game. Hope we will be able to do it in Empire of Sin ! :)

Yeah.... well, I personally wouldn't even bother if it didn't have any combat and besides I'm sure there are a lot more fans of Xcom style combat then the alternative you suggest.
I've honestly never played GOC but, i don't see how Xcom style combat could possibly be a bad thing considering how many people liked it.
