Steam Controller?
This is the first game I have had no luck making compaitble with the steam controller. The controller's default keyboard/mouse profile will run, but as it does not contain the necessary key binding to play this game, and custom profiles are ignored by the game/steam, it does not work for me.

I have posted in the steam controller forums, with no luck. Just thought I'd try here, in hopes of finding a solution. or some insight to get me closer to one.

I'm sorry I don't have a solution, but this game isn't really designed for a controller. I'm not sure how it would even work. And it is probably why it is not compatible with this game.

The Steam controller is made for games that don't support a controller. Valve even advertises it as being compatible with every game on Steam. So far it works fantastically with point and click games, until I encountered The Dig. Out of 500 games, this is the only one that doesn't work properly with it.

My guess is that the overlay is broken, and the devs are too lazy to fix it. The only input I recieved from the steam controller forums, is that I need overlay function.

Did you buy this game in the Lucasarts pack? I'm just wondering if some of the old Lucasarts games don't work as well (Loom, Indiana Jones). I feel like if some of them work then something might have gone wrong with the game install. Otherwise there just might not be support like you said.

Good Question. I must have, because yes i have all of those titles. I'll purge and reinstall them all from a fresh download, and try them all with it. I'll follow up and post my results here for you in a few hours.

Also, while I was at work today, I had a thought. I think these games that behave this way may be reverting the Steam Controller's "Desktop" funtction profile, which it automatically enables when a game is not running, and big picture mode is disabled. So I will also look into seeing if it's possible to make an alternate desktop configuration profile, in hopes of a workaround. :conwayshrug:

My guess at this point, is that it's either an issue with non-overlay compatible titles, or possibly it may not be recognizing games that are loaded with SCUMM loader games. Either way, I am going to get to the bottom of this. I have found the controller to be a fantastic way to play point-and-click titles, when configured well. There are a lot of options to do so, too. By the time I am finished, Steam users will be able to play these titles from the comfort of a lazy couch, somehow :The_Program:

UPDATE: Seems you guessed correct. All the Lucasarts game pack games are affected by this. Game specific configurations are not recognized. However, there is some good news. I did find a workaround for the time being. Apparently Steam does switch to the desktop configuration when running these games, so you can make a steam controller config for the game, by making a custom/alternate desktop configuration, and just activate it in big picture desktop controller settings before playing.

From what I can tell so far, it seems to be releated to Steam's overlay issue. If there is no game overlay available, this is what happens. Hopefully they will correct this in future updates to avoid user confusion, as when you load the game for the first time with the controller, it asks you to configure the controller for the game, then ignores the settings, reverting to desktop config with no warning.

Glad you were able to get a workaround for this. I wish that I could have been more helpful or had a way to troubleshoot it myself. Since these games are as old as they are it probably is not on the top of Steam's list to make the controller compatible with the games, which is a sad thing.

Thats ok. Yeah, I had the same thought. I've noticed in a lot of these games, there are no people making controller configs yet. I guess it's up to me to do it. I admit I am in no hurry, as there are now a lot more people starting to complain about non-overlay games and the workarounds in the Steam controller forums.

I'm hoping they do somthing in an update soon. for now I have made some excellent configs for these games, but I haven't uploaded them, because I would have to do so in the desktop section, and so far, when they fix things like this, a lot of configs get wiped. So I wait, and hone in my configuration skills...

Side note: if anyone does want a steam controller profile for this game, or other lucasarts games we mentioned, let me know, and I'll upload it for you

Please upload it, I need it desperately!
Beavis Jan 20, 2016 @ 10:14pm
Sure, I can upload it tomorrow after work when I get home. Good News too: Seems according to the most recent beta updates, Steam is starting to acknowledge fixing games that don't work with the overlay. So better options may be available soon as well.

In the meantime, I'll upload it to the desktop community profiles tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any issues or would like any tweaks made to it once it's online. To find it: I label all my profiles with "(Vulcan's Profile v#)".

Excellent, thank you so much! Playing old point-and-click games on my TV was a huge selling point for me so this is very much appreciated.

I have good News and bad news.

The Good: It seems the game-specific profiles for this game now work, even without the steam overlay. I set up the profile and it works great.

The Bad: You now have to play for 1 hour before uploading. I played for 2 hours, but I still get the "you must play with your profile for one hour" message when trying to publish it.

I'll try again after work tomorrow. I will not rest until I figure this issue out. After that, I'm going to tackle the rest of the LucasArts Game Pack...

Excellent, thank you for yout time and effort. You can upload the profile outside of Stean as well, right?
Beavis Jan 22, 2016 @ 5:39am
It can be uploaded outside of the game, as a Steam desktop profile, which now also has the 1 hour delay/play requirement. I am trying to get it on both right now. It may be on the desktop profiles, but if so use v2 (version 2), not v1 - I update the mouse controls to make them a little smoother, and added Y/N keys so you can quit or save from the menu too.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I don't find anything when I browse for community created profiles.
