I will second Enter the Gungeon.
Star of Providence is the latest indie I have been playing, and you are right, there is nothing quite like it that I have seen, both in genre and game design.
However, if you want a classic PC game recommendation, you can try Tyrian 2000. It is free over on GOG. Not long like you requested, 8-10 hours, but I think it is worth a shot!
