A Robot Named Fight! is yet another of literally thousands of console ported 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere.

This badly made, lazy pixelcrap platformer is both a "metroidvania" and also, conflictingly, "roguelike". "Metroidvania" means you have to do a lot of backtracking. Lazy devs love this because they don't have to create as much content for the game. "Roguelike" means the developer used procgen algorithms instead of creating content... also lazy. This is absolutely on par with the developer not knowing how to/being unable to do video game graphics properly and using garbage pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. So you can see what's going on here.

Let's dig a little deeper into the technical implementation trainwreck.

From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.

A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.

There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.

PC gamers will be insulted by the demand from the developer that a console peasant children's toy controller should be used, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for, and must never, under any circumstances dictate to gamers how their games are to be experienced.

The game features no proper level design or game/story flow/plot, as they opted to try to use samey repetitive procgen algorithms as a substitute for adding such content to the game, to avoid doing the important job of level/map design. As a result, the game doesn't actually have any content worth mentioning, just endless, boring, repetitive, soulless algorithmically generated sameyness. Developers must learn that procedural generation is not an acceptable substitute for content.

Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone.

These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only appears around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.

A Robot Named Fight! has the cash grab price of $13 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. That's right, the developer couldn't be bothered doing video game graphics properly, creating content or anything else for this lazy console port, but he wants thirteen bucks for you for not doing his job properly. What a joke. You can get Mad Max or Shadow of War for less than this! This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.

It's very much a Super Metroid random map generator, it does succeed at this.

It's a little floaty, the map lacks colour for different areas.

Ultimately I'd much rather play one of the many great metroidvanias (Or even a mid one) than do runs in this. It's technically competant but doesn't draw me in, it felt like a chore to play.

Another game like this that you've probably already played that I did enjoy was Rogue Legacy.

Delaying the acquisition of new unlocks until the next run is far less satisfying than gaining access to the cool new thing during the current run.

Although the art is very nice, the gameplay is a chore. The controls are delayed and sluggish, some enemies are too small, fast and strong, some mechanics are not clear (donations), some bosses are suddenly too hard, the energy for weapons wear off too fast etc. I lost many runs and couldn't figure out what i did wrong.

Good game, shame the dev is a political nutcase who can't keep his opinions to himself when it matters. Don't give money to this person.

Idea and concept sounded good , but the execution was rather disappointing.

It's a great roguelike game overall. The graphics, sound, controls, gameplay are all on point. The difficulty however is another story. This game needs an easy mode. It really isn't for anyone other than hardcore roguelike fanatics. I am more into the roguelikes where randomization is met with progression. This game has no progression. You have to rely entirely on skill. For the price I don't think it's worth it. If it were a serious budget title, maybe that would change things. Overall, this is a frustrating game that clearly has heart but just isn't for me.

For starters: this game is NOT a metroivdania. It's a roguelike game. Much more like Dead Cells, where you open new stuff but with no perma upgrades.
However, it's a more dumbed down version of Death Cells. With clear inspirations on games like Metroid and Megaman.

It plays... awkwardly. Controls are a bit floaty, some enemies are hard to hit and so on. Although once you get the hang of the controls, it isn't bad per se. You can see it's more of a (poor) design choice.

I mean, for the price, sure why not (especially if you get on a sale, which was my case)? It's not a horrible game. But why spend your time on such an OK (at best) game when there are better games out there?

There's no reason whatsoever why perma death is not a toggle option instead of forced on the player.

Especially considering this is almost a copy paste of metroid.

Metroid & Castlevania SOTN was tough but fair, where this game is tough and unforgiving as well as kicks you in the groin as soon as you die.

As fun as the game could have been It really isn't salvageable as a "Metroidvania" due to obnoxious rinse repeat bs of loosing everything.
Summary of the design Find a new boss, with new mechanics and then die, and then you get the drop back to not only where you started as far as the level but removed powerups and everything that made the game genre Metroid actually fun.

The only thing missing in this is Bennet Foddy mocking you with ways to relax replaced by the audible memory of metroid and what it did right only to be r**ed away anytime you think you get far just to drag out any chance of refunding.


TL;DR
Not everyone wants to play a game where permadeath exists and this pretty much emulates it in the worst slow paced way wearing the flesh of a robotic Metroid clone.
