If you're considering the "open world backtracking, I can suggest Guacamelee.
If you're considering the "platformer" part, I suggest 20XX.
However, lets actually considering that for a minute. What comes to mind is either split screen, or forcing both players into the same room, which both sound like a drag. Usually the objective is to explore further without dying, so what if just one player dies? Are you both forced to return to a checkpoint? Can you just revive them, defeating the challenge? What about boss fights?
It's hard to imagine a coop mode for a single player metroidvania that doesn't destroy the flow of the game. It would almost have to be coop only or specific modes that are completely seperate from the single player experience.
I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon. It would be risky like publishing an FPS that doesn't have multiplayer in 2017.
That's a little dissapointing. I too was expecting 2 robot-like characters and explore the world that way
Good luck getting to play it multiplayer though, the virtual console version for Wii U and the rare ambassador program 3DS version both lack the multiplayer feature, meaning you'll either need multiple GBAs, cartidges, and a link cable, or be able to emulate the game effectively.
