I really dont think elder gods should be thrown about lightly.
A elder god loses some of what make them "THEM" when you can kill them...
But this one is different from the other, though I don't know if there are other that don't want to outright kill/eat or other things to people, this isn't one of them.
Yeah but overall I really dont like some of the additions some writers did, Derleth in particular made the setting way to welcoming, and added these "good" gods.
Still, it should at the very least remain a glimer of light in the darkness, if only to keep the lovecraftian horror part intact, and most of all the "good" ones should be hard to find.
But then, I don't really read those sort of books...
its not about Dereleth being a good writer or not, I personally hate and despise the idea of good Elder gods. Dereleth brought christian ideology into the mythos and that severely hurts the basic ideas. There cannot be a concept of good or even evil in Lovecrftian myth. Nyaralatothep is the only one who can ever be considered "good".(meaning interested in human affairs and dont want our destruction(yet)) If there are elder gods looking ourt for humanity, a feeble pathetic and worthless race, than the mythos is severely undermined. Thats why I hate Dereleth's work.
He refused to go along the very core premise of the mythology, the very meaning behind the gods. The universe cannot be uncaring and hostile if there are friends out there with great powers willing to look out for us. The only creature I ever used from him is the fire vampires and even those I make out as a total joke, weak flawed mess :D
Lovecraft is one of my favorite writers, i have the complete works in my library since a child, and yeah i have Derleth's too. For that they are interwined in my mind. Hahahaha you truly hate Derleth XD, the fire vampires reference killed me.
Yeah he tried introduced good and evil in the mythos but I think all the elders gods are amoral beings even the "good" ones. They care about humanity the same as a child with an ant, they simply fight each other and we are sort of caught in the middle, even Kthanid bring people to his cave at random will. He was created not by Derleth but by Brian Lumley for his Titus Crown short novels (a good read by the way).
I remembered the original Nyarlothep from Lovecraft as a christian demon in some sense, its the only free elder god and he truly enjoy suffering and madness to his followers in exchange of his favors. He ultimately serves a hihger power, Azathoth, and his goals are incomprehensible to humanity but surely bring destruction in the end.
Skautfold is your story anyway, it was only small talk but i enjoyed it :). Looking forward to see more creatures and monsters from the mythos that was all. It you wanna stick with Lovecraft original vision thats fine. A bestiary like in Castlevania games to keep track of these finer details would be really cool man. Take care.
