Dash Star is a strong authority on this game. He has a great tutorial on lightsaber combat:

Additionally, I would practice heavily in the singleplayer campaign or in multiplayer against bots before jumping into modded online play with other people. In my experience most of those players have a lot of experience with the game and will eat you alive.

^ This is good advice if you want to learn vanilla Jedi Academy multiplayer mechanics.
However, Movie Battles 2 uses almost a completely different combat system because combat mechanics in MB2 have next to no similarities to mechanics in unmodded (vanilla) Jedi Academy.

My advice is to play "Open" game mode on "Casual corner" MB2 server.
Casual corner is a MB2 server (one in the US and one in EU) made for beginner players and other people who like to play casually. You'll meet lots of new players there so you'll be able to have fun without too many veteran players mopping the floor with you.

I suggest getting to know the mod in "Open" game mode and have fun trying out all the classes, but if you want to try some dueling take a quick look at this guide posted on the official MB2 website:
https://community.moviebattles.org/threads/noels-dueling-guide-up-to-date.4215/

The guide covers every aspect of dueling and explains all the dueling mechanics in detail.
You won't be able to understand everything, so just take a quick look at the basics and go swing your lightsaber in one of the dueling servers!

The community is often pretty helpful - there will be some players who like to troll newbies a bit, but most of the community is friendly and they'll help you with any questions you might have. If you need help with anything, just type it in the chat and I'm sure someone will respond with a helpful comment!

Enjoy the mod and feel free to ask me if you need anything else! :2017stickydrink:

Honestly I think its best if you just jump into an open server with as many players as possible. Watch a couple tutorial videos first, pick your character and your saber style, if in any doubt stick with the yellow style single saber. Make sure to give yourself max force jump, saber block and probably force block points. Also, watch Sylvar's youtube montages, as they are funny but also they will help you get a grip on how the game flows. The best part about this game is that it isn't ultra serious and the primary goal is to simply have fun. Hope you enjoy.

Not a tutorial, but showcases the fun nature of the mod:

This is a tutorial, probably the best video but you can also find written guides online:

Movie Battles 2 has a Launcher that will update and install the mod for you.
After you install the mod, you will use the MB2 Launcher to play it.

Here are the installation instructions from the official MB2 website:
https://moviebattles.fandom.com/wiki/Installation_%26_Troubleshooting_Guide

^ Follow the instructions under "Steam: Launcher installation"

I got this on Switch but my kids are taking it over from me, came here to pick it up and I find there is a thriving modded pvp community? Is this for real?

It's real! You'll find a good amount of players on Movie Battles 2 servers at any time of day. During weekends you'll sometimes struggle to join your favorite server because both new and old players still play this awesome game!
