There are 3 styles.
Red:strong
Yellow:medium
Blue: fast.
The style changes the durations and speed of the swings. Every style has a chance of guard breaking, Red style can break the yellow and yellow can break blue.(im not sure of this, also every server uses his custom rules and settings for the game and some things can be different depending of whitch server are you playing) The swings range is increased with the power of the style.
RED
The advantages.
The red style is capable of doing a lot of damage, if a swing hit the opponent almost completely you can kill him instantly, also the swings are slow and giuves you time to move your mouse arount and adjust the swing to hit the enemy. The swings with this style have long range. Good for poke.
Disadvantages.
Swings are slow, there is a long delay between the attack imput and the saber movement, so when a swing is about to end you have your guard not protected, also this style requires a lot of precision in movement and cordination, if you attack too early the swing is easily dodgeable if too late you can be get off guard.
YELLOW
Advantages.
Yellow is an average style between red and blue. It's fast enought to be almos instant and does good damage. This style can be used a lot cause you can evade and attack right after, also is the most used style for fanning. (Most of the player a saw with this style do like a counter offensive strategy, they wait for you to attack and then hit you and step back) This style is good to finish the opponent, when you see or guess he is low, you can last hit him with this.
Disadvantages.
The only disadvangave for this style is that if the opponent changes to red and there is a saber confilct, he willl win and damage you.
BLUE
Advantages
Blue is not mutch used but is fun. It's the fastest style in the game, the swing is instant, and fast. It's good for fanning because the swings are short and fast and you can repeat them quickly(but it's not very effective). It can be used in a way similar to the yellow to finish opponents, with fast swings when the enemy has the guard uncovered, like with the red stiye.
Disadvantages
Very Low damage, range, and timing of damage. With the last thing i mean the time that the swing is dangerous. Bad for poke.
About turning off a saber with staff, that the simple way to have single saber with medium syle. I don't know staff sytle, but it's different from sigle, in that way tou have more options in battle, the staff swings have a short range than the single one. There might be more things, i just don't know the staff so well, but it's a player choice, if one player is good with staff with 2 blades he doesn't need to change to single.
For block it's a strange thing, i didn't understand it completley and it changes with the server settings and mods. The thing i know is that you can block by standing still. After you start a swing u can't block anymore, remeber also that the style is important, with Red you should be able to block most of the swings from blue and yellow styles.
About turning off the saber in combat, it may be a scenic move or a way to hide the swing direction from the oppononent. There is an animation when you switch weapons that makes the saber hilt spin in the hand, if that animation is triggered just before a swing, it can hide the swing direction and style for the starting 0.5 second.
