An open-world RPG with this kind of lightsaber combat... and some character customisation? I'd go nuts on something like that.
The Jedi Academy engine went open-source, and it's pretty old. I think its general requirements wouldn't be too steep, compared to modern games. It could be expanded... maybe?
"Warframe" is open world, "Two Worlds" is open world, the Gothic series is open world... and they're 3rd-person RPGs. They're also more graphically demanding, and the crunchy bits are pretty deep.
It might be easier to mod another engine up the wazoo, or somehow recreate the mechanics in an open-world engine.
Considering the procedural generation of Sublevel Zero, Shadow Warrior 2 or Diablo/Torchlight, I'd be curious to see randomly created environments that could be navigable by Jedi Academy characters. 3D environments, even tiled together like "Warhammer 40,000 Inquisitor -
Martyr." That might work for numerous Jedi quests, in [generated] unexplored places. (Yes, I'm a sucker for the roguelike craze, I admit.)
I was thinking of this idea just a while ago, dude. This would be a heck of a game.
