I can guess 3 reasons why Movie Battles isn't so popular:
1.) Steep learning curve
Some people give up once they see how complex the mod is - they might feel overwhelmed.
People I've met wanted to play Jedi and Sith classes and rack up a ton of kills like they did in EA's Battlefront 2. It's difficult to play Jedi and Sith classes properly and people just leave the mod because they weren't able to kill everyone by themselves as opposed to Battlefront 2.
2.) The community
Although there are helpful and friendly people in the community, not everyone has enough patience and understanding for newbies. New players have a difficult time during their first few matches because they don't know what they're doing and they're matched against veterans who've played the mod for years.
3.) People don't know Movie Battles exists
Since Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast is going to be released for Nintendo Switch by the end of September, we should advertise the mod a bit.
The next Movie Battles update will include tutorials which will help new players with the basics - hopefully we can let people know about the new update once it arrives.
I like the process of learning and getting used to new game mechanics, however some people dislike having to spend 20 hours or so just to get used to the basics.
I really like games which have depth and lots of mechanics, but some people prefer to just jump in and do stuff - some aren't willing to spend some time to learn first. :D
If something I think it's JA that is holding it back. If Movie Battles was a standalone free game it would become more popular.
I'm saying that because it isn't guranteed you'll get what you paid for on g2a website.
