Yeah, I spent way too much lightening it through a doorway to finally bring it down. I think I used a cheat use force sense 3 to see its health bar, I wouldn't have had the patience to do it if I couldn't see the bar sloooowly draining

it took much more damage from saber throw than lightning

Just mind trick it and then saber it to death. Just make sure you keep it mind tricked until it dies so you don't get crushed.

you can just stay insde the tunnel so it cant reach you

"did you know you can kill the rancor?" I havent gotten that far on Steam (game keeps crashing when i try to enter the AT-AT on Hoth level), but when I had it on X-Box i thought you HAD to kill it.

you may have just saved me A LOT of time if i get that far in SP again.

I played Jedi Academy way before the Steam version appeared. My game was, in fact, pirated. Sweet times. The JA rancor version still scares me, even though I loved fighting them in both "The Force Unleashed" and "Jedi Survivor" later.
So yes, I knew I could kill the rancor. Moreover, I developed my own tactics of fighting them: keep close, let him punch the ground, while you jump, slash him. Rinse and repeat. Essentially, it turns out to be a Dark Souls boss fight. Don't get away too far, jump really high, when he goes for the grab attack. And if he grabs you, slash his muzzle the best you can, otherwise, prepare to reload your last save.

My question on the rancor is how the hell do you save all the prisoners? I open the second cell and the rancor kills them all before I can even get enough lightsaber throws in to kill him halfway!

lead the rancor away, you are not actually supposed to fight it. its more like an Enviromental Hazard than an enemy.
